The Light Earth: Neil McClelland

The Light Earth Flies Like Down
And Yet the Earth Exists
Where the Heart Should Be

I found a “tree of paradise” in a Victoria neighborhood. I don’t remember where. I don’t know what kind of tree it is. But it suggested a poem and I painted it. Three times. But only two paintings would fit into the window.

I explore human relationships to nature, ecological damage, mediated looking, ideas of place, constructed paradises, and themes of utopia and dystopia. I am especially interested in the utopian notion of a “no place”—the good place that doesn’t exist—and the desire for perfect happiness.
