“48 Hour (Diagonal)” consists of two paintings that will be completed over the course of the two days leading up to the opening of the show. One painting receives all attention as the other works as a loose mirror image of the other - a material recording of movement and process. The paintings engage with the physical architecture of the Gallery in appropriating monolithic rectangular shapes to create fields of colour. Over the course of the 48 hours of creation, the paint, in observation of the law of gravity, will force the surface of the painting to slowly dissolve its adherence to the architectural rectangle. And in this process, Franklin will be gradually relinquishing control of the abstract image as it creates its own content for viewership and experience. Once the 48 hours has a lapsed, the paintings will be hung in a manner that subverts the gallery space.
