Torpor is an exploration of images and omens transported by dreams. Still landscapes which imply movement just beyond their borders, organisms which tread the wavy boundary between the recognisable and unknown. Long journeys and dreadful encounters, reduced to a series of snapshots by the forgetful nature of a waking mind.

Gianina Fillipone is an artist born in Victoria, B.C. on the unceded territories of the Songhees, Esquimalt, and WSÁNEĆ peoples. Working primarily between oil painting and charcoal/mixed media drawings, she creates works which explore the divisions between flora and fauna, urban and organic, predator and prey, animate and inanimate in order to evoke larger narratives of consumption, predation, and the uncanny. Fillipone holds a BFA (hons) from the University of Victoria. Her work has been featured in numerous group shows at Uvic’s Audain gallery and in 2024 she was the recipient of the Takao Tanabe Undergraduate Award in Visual Arts.
